Rethinking Assessment

Christine Cawsey, Principal, Rooty Hill High School, NSW, Australia

Using a student agency lens to improve student success on short cycle formative assessment

Wednesday 4 May 2022 7-8pm AEST

Christine Cawsey

In the concept paper for the Online Formative Assessment Initiative, John Hattie, Geoff Masters and Christine Cawsey identified key principles to inform new ways to use formative assessment that will engage students and their teachers in understanding and improving their learning.

In this session Christine will draw on the work of Dylan Wiliam to explore how Rooty Hill High School uses its "student agency" lens to embed lesson based formative assessment using "task-based success" criteria. She will share 3 key tools:
• Lesson design tool
• Subject goal and student academic reporting tool
• Class monitoring tool

She will ask participants to consider who "owns" assessment and why evidence suggests that students who have greater agency are more likely to be successful learners.

AITSL Standards Addressed:
3.1.4: Demonstrate exemplary practice and high expectations and lead colleagues to encourage students to pursue challenging goals in all aspects of their education.
5.1.4 Evaluate school assessment policies and strategies to support colleagues with: using assessment data to diagnose learning needs, complying with curriculum, system and/or school assessment requirements and using a range of assessment strategies.

Session complete. Recording available via ACSA Webinars on Demand.
