The importance of monitoring and discussing student cognition for leading pedagogical change in a digital landscape

Tuesday 1 September 2020 7-8pm AEST

   Presenter bio

The importance of developing student thinking is well documented and conclusive. However, enacting the required shift in pedagogical intent is complex, extending beyond tools and strategies which enable student cognition. Such classroom practices are necessary, yet they are the by-product of a more significant personal transformation. The embodied change is typified in teachers' pedagogical dispositions, the schemes of thought and tendencies to act which influence the practices employed for the development of desired student outcomes .

In the context of online learning, the additional technological aspects can be both advantageous and detrimental to teaching practice. The uncertainty of the new digital landscape brings with it the potential to reshape previously unquestioned pedagogical dispositions. However, the reconstruction process is fragile, a key component being clarity of student expectations for thinking on the part of the teacher. Monitoring, discussing and providing opportunities for student cognition online become critical factors in changing pedagogy. Understanding the multifaceted nature of pedagogical development is vital for educators seeking to lead teaching for thinking in a digital classroom.
