Education with Muslims
ACSA has been working in partnership with the National Centre for Excellence in Islamic Studies (NCEIS) at the University of Melbourne to deliver a series of professional learning workshops called Education with Muslims.
Education with Muslims is aimed at enhancing school educators' cultural awareness about Muslim students, their communities and the wider Muslim world. The initiative is targeted at primary and secondary teachers and is open to educators from all independent, Catholic and government schools. The workshops aim to:
- develop educators' skills and confidence on how to deal with the needs and expectations of Muslim students and their parents
- raise awareness and understanding of Muslim cultures in Australia
- equip educators with the know-how and skills to develop a literacy of Islam and Muslim societies amongst students through curriculum entry pionts
- develop a whole-school approach to support healthy relationships with Muslim students, their parents and their communities
A teacher resource manual is also being developed by ACSA and NCEIS to be lauched and unpacked in workshops in 2010.
